The New Zealand On Screen exhibition was a dynamic showcase of the best of Aotearoa-New Zealand screen culture (film, television and music video). It took place during Rugby World Cup 2011, from 9 September – 23 October 2011.
This free public exhibition ran in modified shipping containers in Wellington and Auckland; and in a caravan that brought tow-your-own cinema to the mainland.
The exhibition was a headline project of the REAL New Zealand Festival 2011. The containers on Auckland’s Queens Wharf, and in Wellington on the waterfront were visited by more than 90,000 people.
Te Ara’s Jock Phillips blogged: “There is general agreement that NZ On Screen, our liveliest cultural website, has now provided one of the hits of the Festival.”
The New Zealand On Screen exhibition was a celebration of Kiwi spirit — as seen on screen.
Engaging hi-tech experiences showcased iconic moments from NZ films, TV and music videos — from Pork Pie to Boy; from Gloss to Billy T; from Hillary and Snell, to The Topps, The Wests, Warriors, Whale Riders, and Fastest Indians.
The souped-up shipping containers’ design and content attracted global notice. Trend-spotting arbiter Springwise.com posted:
“Is there any limit to the potential applications of the humble shipping container? We’re thinking not. Brands and tourism councils around the globe: think videos, think movies, think other engaging content, and be inspired!”
